Through Gates of Garnet and Gold Book Review
Thank you to Netgalley and Tor for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!
Enter the Halls of the Dead. A place where the dead stay, awaiting their next life, and the living become statues. Statues that are alive and move in minute ways during their times of transition. But though Nancy is sure of her door and the world she now presides in, something has riled the Halls of the Dead. Spirits have begun to run rampant throughout the halls, devouring any living statue who dares to show a hint of life. Nancy is tasked with finding help and leaves her precious home once more to return to Eleanor West's School for Wayward Children.
Each Wayward novella brings readers closer to a new world, giving just enough details to build it into a fully realized setting. This time, the cold presence of the dead and the silence of living statues is counterbalanced with the realization of Nancy’s happiness and peace in the setting. While the characters don’t understand why such a place makes Nancy happy, they understand that it's ok for them not to feel the same way and accept Nancy’s choices.
It was wonderful reading about Nancy again, despite the dire circumstances she finds herself and her world in. The way Seanan McGuire is able to bring back old favorites and twine them into new adventures is thrilling. The main antagonist of this novel was portrayed as delightfully sinister in both the tone of writing and their actions. But even though there are familiar faces, a new character has been snuck into the team of characters, and I certainly hope the world she longs for becomes a new story to discover.
Through Gates of Garnet and Gold is a wonderful blend of dark and urban fantasy. The stakes and tensions are high, creating a fast-paced and engaging novella. Despite being novella length, readers will be left feeling as if they have gone on a worthy adventure and crave more of the series.
