The Bone Key Book Review
The writing style of The Bone Key immerses readers into a world of witchcraft and treachery. Mary Rajotte takes time to build the imagery of rituals, spells, and crafting culture. The coven’s powers emerge as both haunting and mystical. Valeria’s coven can shapeshift into owls, yet she is unable to do so. As the daughter of the high priestess of the coven, Valeria’s self-consciousness at her inability to reach her full potential eats away at her and causes a healthy dose of conflict.
On the opposing side are those who hunt the coven with brutal determination. Wanting the power of shapeshifting for themselves, they relentlessly stalk the coven members, picking away at any who stray too far from safety. The history of violence between hunters and coven is laced within the main plot, bringing an ever growing sense of foreboding and fear of the past repeating itself.
There were moments where the story would abruptly shift, causing me to reread paragraphs to see if I had accidentally skipped ahead. While some sudden pivots in the story may read well, it threw me out of the experience with the number of times it happened. However, when I was fully immersed in the story, the emotional notes Mary Rajotte captured were well worth the effort to stay in the story. The anguish Valeria feels at loss, and the ties to her family despite having a strained relationship, are complex and satisfying to see come together.
If you are a reader looking for a fast-paced and witchy read, give The Bone Key a try. It was not the read for me, but it does have a wonderful atmosphere, emotional notes, and witchy vibes.
