You Killed My Dragon Book Review

Thank you to Andrew Johnston for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!

Struggling to survive under an oppressive regime, Karleb grows more than the allotted food. An act so simple, yet it causes him to suffer the death of his dragon and imprisonment. Meanwhile, Leddy, the last of the Unoroff line, seeks to poison those who destroyed her family. But when her attempt fails, the princess ends up on the run, searching for a way to embolden the people to strike back. And lastly, there is Drabar, a man living in the shadow of his brutal father. One who sees the cruelties inflicted on the imprisoned and decides to side with Karleb. However, his loyalty may only stretch so far.

The senseless violence and torture Karleb endures ingrains in the story how the current politics are corrupt. All over a few extra crops to put food on the table for himself. And through Leddy’s viewpoint, readers can see the excess members of the council live with while the common people suffer. And Drabar gives readers a chance to see through the eyes of a family in line with the council; he sees some actions as necessary evils.

You Killed My Dragon is the start to a high fantasy filled with politics and revenge. By the end of this first novella, only a few of the main characters have met, and readers will be eager to see how the storylines come together. This is one for readers who enjoy darker fantasy and downtrodden characters that will need to rise against the challenges before them.
