Eye of the Ouroboros Book Review

Having lost her younger sister during childhood, Theodora throws herself into her work as a park ranger. Both she and her family blame Theo for Flora's disappearance, even though it was Flora who made the decision to walk into the woods. Years of emotional abuse from her parents have done nothing to help soothe the guilt, nor has any successful search and rescue. But Theo truly believes Flora is still in the woods somewhere, and she will be the one to find her.

Megan Bontrager captures raw emotion and the darkness of guilt and blame in a way readers can’t help but become engaged in the story. Theo’s parents are horrible people, and it is clear many of Theo’s actions and mental state are a reflection of the treatment. It doesn’t help that she uses alcohol as a way to numb herself. With such a strong start building the atmosphere and characters, the story may develop slowly, but it is by no means less gripping.

As the story does pick up, the darker tone is enhanced by portal travel and worlds being devastated. The true intentions of the antagonist could have been built up a little bit more, but the ensuing action and desperate decisions provide a significant hook. The working mechanics of the Ouroboros also need a bit of polishing, but if you are a reader that rolls with the punches, this is certainly a book for you.

Eye of the Ouroboros is teeming with dark emotional states and conflicting actions that arise from the main character's depth of guilt. This book certainly has put Megan Bontrager on my radar, and I would love to read more from this author.
