The Temps Book Review
While the world outside the Delphi office building becomes filled with rage induced humans, four temps show readers their view of the chemical induced apocalypse. Each temp has a different personality, perspective, and background, but together they pull the pieces of the story together for readers and uncover startling truths.
Jacob took the job at Delphi just to have a paying job. He doesn't even know what the company does. But as the apocalypse descends and he finds himself trapped in what appears to be a secure office building with resources, he becomes determined to find out what Delphi does.
Lauren is a classics major who sees the resemblance to mythology and the way Delphi operates. And while she might not want to be a reader, she does want to make sure women are equally represented in whatever new leadership takes over.
Swati is in tune with her mind and body as a Yoga instructor. While by day she started teaching Delphi employees mindfulness, during the apocalyptic events she is also a main voice of reason and voted into being a leader for the Temps.
Dominic has seen the way the apocalypse usually goes in fiction and is prepared to deal with it. His focus is more on protecting their resources from outside influence. But he also won’t hesitate to take action when lives are on the line.
Readers will experience the struggles of a new society forming and the complexity between balancing beliefs and personalities. The initial start of the apocalypse is quick to happen, and the story will slow as the group of temps come together and plan their survival. But as the lines are drawn and the satirical comedy of temps settling into a form of office work to survive takes over, a saboteur will kick the story back into action.
The Temps is not as action-packed as other dystopian fiction. While there are interactions with those impacted by the apocalypse, it is more so the catalyst for everything else. It will include how temporary employees are treated and the expectations from them if the world were to start over. And there will be a few shocks along the way.
