The Bookshop Below Book Review

Thank you to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!

Enter a world of magical bookshops and deadly secrets. Cast out from the life of the magical bookshops, Cassandra turned to thievery. Skilled in ways few others were, she was quite good at it. But when she learns of her mentor’s death and receives a letter of ownership for the very bookstore she was cast from, Cassandra finds a second chance. Though it may not turn out at all how one would suspect.

Cassandra Fairfax is a blunt and forward protagonist, but she is intelligent and determined. While she may seem unlikable at first, keep reading. Cassandra will win readers over with her self-discovery and passion for the bookshop. She has so much to uncover, both about the bookshops and herself. The journey will captivate readers and be well worth the investment. Those who are passionate about books and reading will find their aspirations reflected in Cassandra’s actions.

Time is against Cassandra as the bookshops’ powers dwindle, and there are no easy answers. The overarching tension combines with the unsolved murder of Cassandra’s mentor and a corrupt secret society to create a sophisticated and darker tale. Throughout the multiple points of view, startling discoveries will take place.

The audio narration for The Bookshop Below kept the rhythm of the story together while adding tension and emotion. The depth given to the characters with the narrator’s inflections and tone was a delight. Not to mention the range of characters Gabrielle Nellis-Pain was able to carry, breathing life into each one so differently. While the pacing may be slower, it is by no means any less interesting.

The Bookshop Below is for readers who enjoy rich magical worlds, secret societies, and mysteries.
