Charlie was once a prestigious con artist, able to deceive the doubtful and pick pocket the many. In an attempt to start over and give up conning, Charlie bartends. But when she witnesses the murder of one of her customers, she can’t help but dig into the why. The drive to know and the need to mettle runs deep within Charlie, and it will be her undoing. One question will lead her down a path she cannot return from.
The world readers will find themselves in is dark and gritty. Shadows for some have become creatures of power, and the greedy do what they can to ensure they attain one with abilities. Whether it is through expensive treatments or nefarious and tragic means, money gets what money wants in this world. Even if there are morals and rules that should govern the rich. And Charlie will find herself unwillingly dragged into the dark world.
Holly Black weaves together the past and the present, showing Charlie’s childhood led astray and the building blocks of a talented con artist. What Charlie endured as a child formed the broken yet determined woman she is in the present. And that same con artist has won over a man named Vince. Someone who is shrouded in mystery, yet provides Charlie with the best relationship she’s ever had. A relationship built on lies. And as each of their carefully stacked lies is revealed, everything will come crashing down.
