The Ghost Merchant Book Review
Thank you to Ben Andrews for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!
Around the world, there are exclusive shops that not only peddle mortal wares but also ghosts. Customers are on a need-to-know basis and find the shops only when they need to. Erin's life is taken too soon, as so many are, and she finds herself as another ghost on the merchant's shelf. But the merchant, Quill, can tell she isn't a normal ghost. As they explore her capabilities, they will discover that some rules are meant to be tested. But those that decided to go against the boss, must be prepared to deal with the consequences.
The overall mystery of how the world works, who the boss is, and how ghost merchants came to be is so enticing. The story drops so many hints, allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions. I really hope to see more in this world and what else there is to offer.
Erin is a feisty and determined woman. She makes sure to ask questions and challenge what she doesn't think is right. For someone like Quill, who follows the rules and rarely strays from them, she is quite the challenge. But as they grow to know one another, they will learn valuable lessons from each other. Witnessing two characters at odds, yet growing to understand one another is a beautiful journey. Readers will be able to see from both viewpoints and the growth each undergoes.
Time passing in books is generally done in a way to make the reader conscious of it. And make no mistake, The Ghost Merchant starts chapters with this in mind. But the way the characters and the story progress fully immerse the reader into the concept that time passes differently for ghosts. Whether it is through dialogue or sudden things characters encounter, it all sets up the wonderful experience of time for the reader just like it is for the ghosts.
The Ghost Merchant was a delight to read. The theme of found family remains strong throughout the novel, as well as learning to think outside of the norm. Dealing with the guilt of the past and learning to forgive yourself also plays a large part in this tale. Fans of fantasy and the supernatural should give this a try!
