Grave Importance Book Review
When Greta receives a call to fill in as medical director for a luxury mummy spa, she jumps at the chance. But as she travels to Egypt and begins to treat her new patients, she finds a strange illness plaguing the mummies. Random onset of fainting, fatigue, and weakness. And for a being that can fall apart from one wrong move, fainting spells could mean disaster. Greta must find an answer soon, or else her patients will be nothing more than dust.
The mix of Egyptian magic and mummy lore was a delight to read. And the audiobook narrator did a phenomenal job voicing the mummies, adding a dusty sounding voice and slowing down pronunciations. The medical complexities of a mummy having to treat their organs and replace bones and muscles were fascinating. One can understand how Greta is so thoroughly involved with her job. It seems as though there is something new to learn every day!
The overarching mystery around the sudden mummy illness played straight into a leftover story trail from book two. Vivian Shaw deftly expanded her universe and teased readers with near-endless possibilities for future novels. Not to mention adding plenty of action and humor.
At this point, I'm convinced no matter where the band of characters ends up, it will be a good time. They have beautiful and humorous relationships, and their personalities balance so well off one another. And while there may be many characters milling around this third novel, there is plenty of page time for them all. And the introduction of seeing through multiple points of view is a delight.
Grave Importance is a must read book for those who enjoy fantasy novels. Each of the Greta Hellsing books has healthy doses of humor, witty characters, and refreshing supernatural lore. Readers will be eagerly awaiting the next book to see where the cast journeys next.
