Dreadful Company Book Review

When a colleague falls ill and calls in Greta as a substitute, she finds herself unexpectedly attending a medical conference in Paris. Sure to be filled with hours of supernatural academics, Greta is left alone to enjoy the scholarly side of her work. But she unknowingly catches the eyes of an old foe of Ruthven. One who fixates on Greta to become the key piece in his revenge.

While book one established the supernatural community as hidden and civilized, book two dives into the other side of the society. One where they care little for rules of decorum and give in to their base desires. And apparently enjoy lots of body glitter.

Greta will find herself in the company of a vampire coven whose leader falls into every trope known about vampires and a heavy dose of recent pop culture. And though they may look ridiculous, their fangs are no less sharp. Greta must survive and find a way to be free before she becomes the next meal.

Multiple points of view are introduced as old and new characters surface. A few more tidbits of Varney and Ruthven will be revealed as they seek to rescue Greta. There is also a wonderful peek into the use of magic and the repercussions it can have on the universe as a whole. Moving forward, I hope this series explores that bit even more.

Dreadful Company is another romp of a book that blends humor with darker urban fantasy. A slow burn romance is triggered as the story progresses, and the nods to pop culture were hilarious. The dynamics between characters old and new characters are amazingly well written and show the talent Vivian Shaw has as a writer. There is no doubt the next book will be just as good.
