A Psalm for the Wild-Built Book Review
When the life Dex has attained no longer fits their idea of purpose, they set out to find a way to feel fulfillment. What they never expect is to find a fabled robot from long ago. Mosscap has volunteered to be the first robot to reach out to humankind since the machines' awakening. Together, Dex and Mosscap will navigate finding their purpose and learn to understand each other's beliefs and cultures along the way.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built is a slow and contemplative story. It introduces a world where robots have returned to nature and become nothing more than myths and legends. Dex’s discovery of Mosscap will not bring anything like epic battles or life threatening situations. But what it will bring is a cozy exploration of identity and purpose. One where the two characters learn about both themselves and each other, fostering a new understanding of both their actions and choices in life. And as with all of Becky Chambers’ stories, there is a wonderful amount of inclusivity and diversity.
For readers who enjoy a warm cup of tea and a light philosophical conversation, this book is for you. Or if you're looking for a quick, cozy disconnect from reality, this will be just the read. This is a foundational book for the world, showing how life was before and after the robot’s awakening. And also showing a gentle side to human nature, as Dex seeks to help others along their journey. I am looking forward to brewing a cup of tea and beginning the next novel.
