The High Priestess' Game: Part One Book Review
Thank you to Rahel Vega for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!
For years Rahel has read tarot in her shop, building a life for herself and connections with her patrons. Her landlord has kept the rent affordable amidst the price hikes in New York City, but he’s running out of the ability to do so. Faced with immediate eviction, Rahel suddenly finds herself without a home and her future in pieces. Rahel decides to cast a spell to manipulate her chances and set her eyes on the casino. But as she begins to win big, she will forever change the path she walks.
Readers are introduced to a world of reading tarot cards and living a small but peaceful life. With such a huge disruption, Rahel has a wealth of character growth awaiting her. Inexperienced in gambling, but with spirit guides by her side, Rahel tries her hand at winning big. With a spell, it’s easier than expected, but the house is always watching. She’s going to make mistakes that will ultimately put her on a new path of growth. Keep in mind she has a long way to go, so there will be lots of mistakes. But there is much promise in future novels for her.
The use of tarot cards to progress the story was great. Instead of simply reading cards for other people, Rahel uses them to try and guide her onto the right path forward. The mystical element they added alongside the spirit guides makes a great blend of speculative fiction. The interpretation of the cards came into play as well, showing how a reading can have different meanings. Even as experienced as Rahel is with reading tarot, the writing shows how personal judgment can cloud a reading.
There were plot points that could use some ironing out. The use of the casino and the mysterious character who speaks to Rahel was a good pivot, but a bit disjointed. That being said, the writing is exceptional. The descriptions and ability to set a tone are spot on, drawing the reader into the moment. I am eager to read the next novel due to all the changes in Rahel’s life. I want to see where the ending of this novel will lead her, and what her future holds. Speculative fiction readers should give The High Priestess' Game a read!
