The Dead Girls' Dance Book Review

Picking up where book one left off, Clare and her friends must deal with the aftermath of their choices. Shane's father is back in town with a gang and plans to start an all-out war against the vampires. And while the denizens of the night have wronged Clare and her friends, the gang's actions will bring devastating consequences.

Readers were given a glimpse into the cruelty of the vampires in book one. The entirety of book two will navigate the unfair and vicious vampire politics. There is no pardon given to those involved in the death of a vampire. Clare must face the possibility of losing those she loves. Certain characters will make decisions that they can never come back from. And Monica is back, worse than book one, plotting and manipulating her way to torturing Clare in new ways.

True to young adult style, there is a healthy dose of flirtatious thoughts from Claire's point of view. The allure of having an older boyfriend and the fine line Clare walks with certain legal activities are still present. As an adult, it isn't appealing, but the younger crowd will find it entertaining.

While the overview of the book highlights the Dead Girl's Dance, it is a minor plot point. The war between vampires and humans, and the cascade of actions resulting from it, remain at the forefront. Though there are still breaks in tension to focus on the more young adult setting of school and the dance.

Claire's immaturity can slow the story's pace and make the reader question her choices. But this does leave plenty of room for her to grow. I would still recommend The Dead Girls' Dance to young adult fantasy readers. And while this is a nostalgia read, I can't honestly remember what happens next. I am looking forward to seeing how certain choices pan out in book three that cannot be reversed.
