Feast of Fools Book Review

After the challenges and life-threatening events of the past few novels, Claire and her friends are in for an even more sinister time with Feast of Fools. Claire’s parents have come to town, but not willingly. An old vampire stalks the streets of Morganville, bringing with him fellows who would rather not play by the rules. Dragging Claire’s parents into the middle is only the beginning. Claire and the others may not like the vampires of Morganville, but the twisted rules of the town do a lot more to keep them safe than what is in store.

Readers have the chance to experience vampire culture if there were no safeguards in place for humans. While there is a fine line to walk in Morganville, there is at least a line that should not be crossed. Claire will also learn that sometimes trust should not be easily given, as there is much going on in the background she cannot see.

She is still brash and making poor decisions, but it is true to her age and the romantic inclinations of young adults. Rachel Caine does a great job of keeping the horror and risk taking to the young adult level, and yet still creating an enticing story for those who are out of the age range.

Feast of Fools will play along the edges of appropriate and hint at the heinous acts vampires commit outside of the town. After all, being the apex predator means vampires can do as they please with their victims. There is plenty of high tension and high stakes, making this a quick read and leaving readers wondering what comes next.
